Oriental was founded in 1964 in the town of Humacao, Puerto Rico as Oriental Federal Savings and Loan Association, under the federal law of savings and loans associations, a law that promoted consumer savings and housing through mortgage loans. Through the years, the organization became a savings bank, and then a commercial bank. Today Oriental is a subsidiary of a diversified financial services company. Its legal name is Oriental Bank and Trust and it is a subsidiary of Oriental Financial Group. In 1992 Oriental became the first bank in Puerto Rico to appear in the American Stock Exchange (Amex), the second largest stock-exchange index in the United States. Oriental Financial Group stocks (symbol: OFG) are traded in the New York Stock Exchange. As of December 31, 2010 Oriental had assets of $7.31 billion.
During its evolution, Oriental has incorporated other lines of financial business in addition to traditional banking, including: trust, brokerage, insurance, and mortgage loans. Products and services offered to consumers have been expanded considerably, including diverse segments of commercial and investment banking.
Oriental has a distribution network throughout Puerto Rico, featuring Over 30 Financial Centers, predominately in cities and towns of great population concentration and a strong presence in growing rural sectors. One of the main benefits for customers of Oriental Financial Centers is the fact that all their financial needs are met in one place, without having to go to other facilities, regional or central offices. This integration of financial services allows customers to take advantage of Oriental's financial planning expertise.
